Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
