The anticipation about the recent awards show has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team might be designing a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
