Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major blasts shaking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially offer further details.
Context: Rising Strains and Recent Developments
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the region. Major events leading up to this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of American warships in the region, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation is fluid, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
